You Are More Than Just a Year: Why Precise Age Matters
Sometimes or most of the time, when people ask our age, we tend to give a short-cut answer. If it is a math subject, we neglect the decimal point. We will simply state the number of years without specifying the number of months and days. How nice if we could mention the number of years, months and days precisely, even if it is not so applicable. A man is likely to give the exact number of years where whereas a woman may not, but instead ask why someone asks about their age. Anyway, this is related to the psychology of men and women.
1. The Science of Time and Ageing
The Difference Between Biological vs. Chronological Age
Chronological Age (The Calendar Truth)
This one’s simple:
- It’s the number of years since birth
- Everyone your age has the same chronological age
- You cannot change it
If you were born on 1 Jan 1990, you’re 36 in 2026. End of story.
Biological Age (The Body’s Reality)
Biological age reflects how old your body actually functions, at the cellular and organ level. It answers:
“How much wear and tear has this body accumulated?”
This is about hell lots of biological factors to take into account.
Two 36-year-olds can look, feel, and function like they’re 28 vs 50 internally…Yes, it is a fact. Many people at my age can’t even jog or run, whereas I still can jog and run. But then again, others are much better than myself as they even join running competitions or climb high mountains at a much faster speed.
Why Two Same-Birthday People Age Differently
1. Lifestyle Is the Biggest Driver
This is where things diverge fast.
| Habit | Person A (Clean and filtered) | Person B (more or less self-destruction style) |
|---|---|---|
| Diet | Whole foods, controlled sugar | Ultra-processed, sugary, salty, MSG excess |
| Exercise | Strength + cardio | Sedentary – watching TV on a coach day long, lying down day long, no walking and lazy all day long. |
| Sleep | 7–8 hrs consistently | Chronic sleep debt – always don’t have sufficient sleep. |
| Smoking | Never | Smoker |
| Alcohol | Minimal | Heavy |
| Stress | Managed | Chronic |
Clear conclusion:
-> Person A’s cells repair efficiently.
-> Person B’s cells accumulate damage.
Same birthday. Totally different bodies due to different habitual styles.
2. Cellular Damage & Repair Speed
Your body is constantly repairing itself. Biological age reflects:
- DNA damage is irrespective of lifestyle.
- Mitochondrial efficiency
- Inflammation levels
- Hormonal balance
If damage outpaces repair, biological age accelerates.
That’s why:
- Chronic inflammation = faster ageing due to slow, long-term inflammation lasting for prolonged periods of several months to years
- Insulin resistance = results in elevated levels of glucose in the blood, leading to faster ageing
- Persistent stress hormones = faster ageing
3. Telomeres: Your Cellular “Fuse”
Telomeres are protective caps on chromosomes. Every time a cell divides, it shortens.
- Healthy lifestyle → slower telomere shortening
- Smoking, obesity, stress → rapid shortening
Short telomeres = older biological age, regardless of calendar years.
4. Epigenetics: Lifestyle Rewrites Your Biology
Your DNA doesn’t change—but how genes are switched on/off does.
Poor habits (refer to the table of Person B above) can activate:
- Inflammatory genes
- Cancer-related pathways
- Metabolic dysfunction
Good habits activate:
- Repair mechanisms
- Longevity pathways
- Cellular resilience
Same DNA. Different outcomes.
5. Organ System Ageing Is Uneven
Biological age isn’t one number—it’s a profile, and different individual has different biological profiles.
- Heart age
- Lung age
- Metabolic age
- Brain age
- Muscle age
Someone can be:
- Chronologically 40
- Cardiovascularly 55
- Muscularly 35
That’s why “looking young” means nothing if arteries are ageing fast. This is a fact. Some people who have a baby face may have ended their lives earlier compared to those who look very old.
Real-World Example
Two men, both 45:
Person A
- VO₂ ( measures how much oxygen your body consumes while exercising) max of a 30-year-old
- Normal blood sugar
- Low inflammation
- Strong grip strength
Biological age ≈ 32, meaning much younger than person B in terms of biological age.
Person B
- Pre-diabetic
- High visceral fat
- Poor sleep
- Chronic stress
Biological age ≈ 58, meaning much older than person A in terms of biological age.
Same birth date. Different trajectories or lifestyles.
The Brutal Truth
- Chronological age is fixed
- Biological age is negotiable, meaning you have control over your own body by making certain decisions, on What, When, Wher and How to control your own body.
Your body keeps a score of everything:
- What you eat
- How you move
- How you sleep
- How you manage stress
You don’t “age” evenly—you earn it, daily. I am a smoker, social drinker, sleep debtor, and name anything that goes against my body..I have these habits and characteristics.
